The Chief Minister’s Special Monitoring Unit (SMU) has launched a campaign for educating the females of the Punjab Province against harassment and gender-based violence. For this purpose, a campaign by the name of Women on Wheels (WoW) was also launched by the SMU of Law and Order Wing of Punjab Government. The aim of the campaign and workshop to provide the free lessons of the motorcycle to women in near future for increasing their presence in the public.

AN information session was conducted by City Traffic Lahore at Traffic Police Driving School. The event was largely attended by the representatives of the lawmaker and domestic workers. Moreover, SMU official Salman Sufi, CTO Tayyab Hafeez Cheema and provincial lawmakers Farhana Afzal and Marie Gil was also present at the information session. They also addressed at the session. The women of the Punjab Province will go through training by the female traffic wardens. For creating the awareness in public, is WoW motorcycle rally is scheduled for December. Registration for training has started by the SMU. Willing females can get themselves registered by emailing their name, CNICs and phone numbers at SMUCMO@gmail.com. The shortlisted candidates would be informed by the respective unit and will be provided free training lessons.

According to SMU, “Motorcycle training lessons are going to be provided on a rolling basis and once the first batch of trainees in ready, the Women-on-Wheels (WoW) rally will be held in December 2015.”

Talking at the information session, Salman Sufi said that women development department has also been taken into confidence. This will assist the Punjab Government in launching its Scoters Scheme for Women that is the part of Women Empowerment Initiatives.

The SMU is an entity of the GoP and is being supervised directly from the Chief Minister Office. The aim of the SMU is to bring reforms in law and orders in the following:

  • Violence against Women Centres (VAMC)
  • Model Graveyards
  • Transforming Current Policing Model
  • Dealer Vehicle Registration System (D.V.R.S)
  • Token Tax Identification Stickers
  • Specialty Plates
  • Introduction of Camera Integrated Traffic Fines
  • Traffic Reforms
