2012 certainly had its ups and downs. A big year for the newsmakers as far as the world leadership is concerned. Leaders faced tough situations and their leadership skills were really tested during 2012. Following is a brief introduction of some of the famous leaders who impressed the most during 2012.

1. Christine Lagarde

She became the first woman who headed the IMF (International Monetary Fund). She really did not have the time to get settled before she took the seat and had to handle the on-going Euro Zone crisis. She was featured among the Forbe’s most powerful people and most powerful women as she became the director of 188 countries financial organisation. She managed to pile up $430 billion extra from G20 countries to double the lending capacity of IMF. Former lawyer and influential French politician also raise two sons along with her professional activities.

2. Barack Obama

Obama won second 4-year presidential term but not so easily. It was one of the tightest, toughest and closest victories in the history of United States presidential election races. One would have thought him as a failed leader as Mitt Romney’s campaign attempted to paint him that way, but Obama stayed confident about his policies and sent Navy SEALs to take out Osama from the scene and his timely departure from Iraq. In difficult times he managed to stay confident and smart.

3. Imran Khan

A world cup winning cricket team captain ready to sail the boat of his country in the crisis. Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) is showing resilience to the drone attacks in his country when no other major leader is doing so. This anti-drone movement has been the major reason of his success during the early 2012. The exact data on deaths caused by United States drone attacks is hard to assimilate but since 2004 the death toll is more than 800 civilians. It includes the death of more than 150 innocent children.

Imran Khan’s anti-drone stand and his policy against violence has been playing a central role in his Election 2013 campaign.

4. Hilary Clinton

Famous for being travelling a lot, Hilary Clinton is reported to have travelled at least 111 countries during her role as secretary of the state. She is known to deal with real crisis around the world during her stay in the office. She was there when the war in Syria waged, attack on United States’ consulate in Benghazi and she was there when the Gaza and Israel conflict was on-going. She has built a reputation during all those past years in the office and she is the Gallup’s most admired woman. She is considered to be the most favourite person to run for President in 2016 US elections.

5. Kim Jong Un

He became the new supreme leader of North Korea. He is the son of Kim Jong II. He has been in the spotlight for being the leader of such a solitary state in the current situation. His marriage to Ri Sol Ju and all the experimentation with the rockets and missile stuff kept him under the spotlight for almost the whole year 2012.

6. Aung San Suu Kyi

She won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1991 for her activist protests and how bravely she has been participating in those protests. These protests were against widespread slaughter of Protestants, who were fighting against oppressive rule of dictator U Ne Win of Myanmar. Her political party has won majority of the seats in parliamentary elections and she also received accolades for her work in the United States. These accolades include Congressional Gold Medal and the Atlantic Council’s Global Citizen Award.

7. Mohamed Morsi

After the departure of Hosni Mubarak, he became the first democratically elected leader in Egypt. Initially he was showing impressive progress but what put him under the spotlight was his controversial statement about the judiciary. He stated that he was above the powers of judiciary and this enraged people and furious protests in Cairo took place. There are some accusations related to him regarding detaining and beating his opponents. His leadership skills sparked when he successfully made a peace deal between Israel and Gaza in recent bloodiest conflict.

8. Hugo Chavez

Chavez is one of the most influential Latin America leaders. He got elected for 6 more years as Venezuela’s president. He has been ruling Venezuela for the last 14 years. He has been fighting with cancer and for the first time in these 14 years he seems to have shown the possibility that he needs someone to take his place after him.

9. Bashar Al-Assad

Syria’s dictator President for the first time in 2012 has seen the greatest threat to his dictatorship since 2000. He joined the office in 2000 after the death of his father. When the uprising in the Middle East reached its peak, he got locked into the region’s bloodiest clashes. Not only people of Syria got conflicted on this issue but the world was also divided on this issue. 40,000 people died and Russia who is considered to be the ally of Assad also shown concerns regarding his presidential regime.
