PEMRA Recommends Cancellation of Geo TV License

The complaints council of PEMRA (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has recommended that the license of Geo TV should be cancelled. The reason is none other than the issue of airing blasphemous content in their morning show ‘Utho Jaago Pakistan’.

In this program Shaista Lodhi, Veena Malik and Asad Bashir Khan were the main characters where a munaqibat was played during the marriage ceremony of Veena Malik and Asad.

PEMRA has already sent Geo TV a show cause notice some days ago regarding this issue of airing blasphemous content where during the marriage a munaqibat was played while Veena Malik was being made a bride.

PEMRA spokesperson revealed that over 10,000 complaints were received against the morning show blasphemous content and these complaints were forwarded to complaint council for review and recommendation was asked.

According to media sources, the recommendation for cancellation of license of Geo TV is under the PEMRA rules section 26. Now PEMRA regulatory authority can call a meeting at any time to decide the fate of Geo TV.

This is not all but Veena Malik and Asad Bashir Khan have already left the country while Shaista Lodhi is reported to have decided to leave Pakistan amid the death threats.

Mir Shakeel Ur Rehman also is under fire from Imran Khan and people of Pakistan and he is already residing out of Pakistan.

Geo TV has given new trends to Pakistani electronic media and changed how the news are shown on television in Pakistan but over the period of time they went over the line a few times and this time they hurt the sentiments of Pakistani nation with an attack on religion and also on Pakistan Army thus it might prove to be the last nail in the coffin for them.
