Tea or Chai has a central significance in Pakistani culture. Whatever the season is, the consumption of tea always remains high. For the same reason, tea is one of the most consumed beverages in Pakistani cuisine. The interesting fact here is that despite the fact that there is no production of tea in Pakistan; still it is the third largest importer of tea in the world.

The other name of tea in addition to chai is Dudh Patti that is most common in upper Punjab. However, in rest of the country, Chai and Dudh Patti stand for two different types of tea. Here is the recipe for common Pakistani tea that is consumed by billions of Pakistanis regularly.

Ingredients and Tools

  • 1 medium/small pan (at least 5 inches deep)
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 2/3 – 1 cup water
  • 2 heaping teaspoons of loose Chai tea
  • 2 pieces of the whole cardamom (optional)
  • Strainer

Procedure:

Step 1: Take a pan, at least, five inches five inches deep. Pour 2/3 – 1 cup water and put the pan on the stove. Wait for two to three minutes until it starts bubbling.1

Step 2: Add two heaping teaspoons of loose Chai tea. Now leave this for two to three minutes to boil briskly. Add two pieces of the whole cardamom (optional).2

Step 3: Add one 1/2 cup milk. Add sugar according to requirement and wait for three minutes.3
