In United Kingdom where Muslim community is huge in numbers and it is still escalating, the trend of Mut’ah is getting popular among the Muslim community. As a part of the Muslim community, having a girlfriend or boyfriend cannot be introduced as Muslims do not accept this kind of thing among them. Mut’ah is when a couple get married on contractual basis. New generation of Muslim British are indulging in this sin without getting to know what exactly they are doing. In Shia sect of Muslims this kind of Nikah is considered correct and their customs allows it. Different Muslim religious scholars have different views on this issue of Mut’ah. Shia sect follows this trend and they consider it correct but Sunni sect considers it wrong and Haraam. The Shia scholars give the logic that this is an old custom of Islam that those people who are away from their homes and their wives, they can practice the Mut’ah as a contractual marriage in order to keep themselves clean from the sin of Zinah. BBC raised a point that if Mut’ah is considered valid only in certain situations and certain sects, why the young and settled younger Muslim generation would do it.

The point that is creating the major distress is that the younger generation does not consider it a sin; they consider it according to the teachings of Islam. Sara who did Mut’ah 6 months before her proper marriage disclosed that she did not commit a sin and she did it with the acceptance of her father and family as the time period of Mut’ah contract was set and “Haq Mehr” was also negotiated and agreed upon. She further said that it helped her to maintain a balance between religion and her life.

Majority of the religious scholars agree upon the fact that Mut’ah is just like Zinah. Some of the people these days give the logic that since Mut’ah is a Nikah with some obligations and contract, so one of the points in the contract can be that their shouldn’t be any kind of physical relationship between the girl and the boy. During the time of the contract that can be from some hours up to some years, the girl and boy who have already done Nikah can meet and talk to each other without worrying about any sin.

Whatever is the case, the trend is a false one and the idea behind the Mut’ah Nikah is a controversial one and by no means it is going to do good to the image of Islam.
