Chief Minister Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif has approved free of cost public Wi-Fi facility across the province to enhance the information technology sector of the province.
Decision to this effect was made by CM while chairing a high level meeting in Lahore on Wednesday. Addressing the meeting, he said books of science and math have already been digitized in the province.
However, on Thursday CM gave approval of various technological projects for the growth of information technology sector in the province. The meeting approved mega projects in this regard such as “Khadim-e-Punjab Metro WiFi Network Program” and distribution of computer tablets among math and science teachers of grades eight to 10. The meeting also decided to distribute tablets among top students between grade five to grade eight at public schools.
In Khadim-e-Punjab Metro Wi-Fi Network, free public Wi-Fi will be made available at important places of the province such as educational institutions, hospitals, railway stations, airports, metro bus routes of Lahore and Rawalpindi, bus stands, etc.
Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan will be the first ones to get free public Wi-Fi. Moreover, the scheme will be expanded in other mega cities of the province after successful achievement in the above mentioned cities.
CM said that Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) had started the program of digitalization of textbooks with cooperation of Punjab Text Boards and up to now math books of many classes have been digitalized. We are trying to digitalized all text books of science subjects and mathematics from 6th to 10th class while CDs of the books have also been produced.
The CM ordered a committee headed by the chief secretary to submit recommendations on promotion of information technology public departments. The PITB chairman gave a presentation on measures for promotion of information technology.
