Promise has been rendered several times by the high-ups and official announcement was made by Chief Minister of Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif to withdraw 19.5% internet sales tax. This tax was imposed on 28th of May 2015 and due to public unacceptability this tax was withdrawn and Shahbaz Sharif announced it officially on his Facebook account as well as a press release that was picked by media.

Shahbaz Sharif Announcement

Finance Minister of Punjab has also announced the reversal of internet taxes. It seems that Punjab Revenue Authority has either forgotten to issue a notification for reversal of these taxes or they have been told not to do so. One month is a big deal and no action on CM Punjab’s official announcement seems shady.

In the first case, the Punjab Revenue Authority seems to have been comprised of incompetent staff with no idea how to do things and how important it is to issue a notification so that the promise of the CM be fulfilled.

In the second case it seems that Punjab Revenue Authority is well above CM Punjab and doesn’t care what he says in official / unofficial capacity. His announcement seems just a public stunt to gain some political mileage.

Mobile phone operators in Punjab are charging 19.5% GST from consumers of Punjab which is in addition to 14% FED imposed by Federal Government. The question is whether this money will be reimbursed to the consumers if the GST is reversed? I don’t think so.

With every passing day, Pakistan Muslim League (N) is committing political suicide and it is beyond understanding why placing internet taxes on people of province from which they got most of their votes and came into central government?
