Facebook blocked 25 pages in Pakistan over government’s request

For the first time ever, social networking giant have provided the information about the government’s request in getting the user’s account data.

Globally, 27 percent of the rise is seen in the government requesting for user’s account data in first half of 2016 as compare to the second half of the last year.

Similar to that the increase in Pakistan’s government’s requests of getting access to user’s account data in the first half of 2016 has observed a rise of 200 percent as compare to the first half of 2015.

From January 2016 to June 2016, Pakistan government made 719 request to Facebook to get the user data account of 1,029 Facebook accounts, where after seeing the urgency and importance of the data to help out in criminal cases, Facebook authorities provided data in 65 percent of the cases.

Moreover the Facebook authorities also told that around 25 Facebook pages were blocked over Pakistan’ government’s request.

“Based on legal requests from the Pakistan Telecom Authority, we restricted access to content for allegedly violating local laws prohibiting blasphemy, desecration of the national flag, and condemnation of the country’s independence,” a statement on Facebook’s website read.
