In the midst of the US/China trade war, the two nations have struck up a partnership to address semiconductor supply and security issues. The China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA) has set up a working group with the US to help deal with issues such as “export control and supply chain security” for chips.

The CSIA made this announcement earlier today on March 11, 2021. The move comes amid one of the worst global chip supply shortages in history that has impacted multiple industries alike.

The news also comes at a time where there is a rise of speculation claiming that the US-China trade war is easing now that US President Joe Biden has taken over and has promised to address the global shortage of chips.

This development should help the ailing Chinese firms including tech giants like Huawei and SMIC which are all suffering from a lack of chip supply. The working group between the two countries aims to promote a “deeper mutual understanding and trust” between the US and Chinese semiconductor industries and to resolve concerns through cooperation.

The US counterpart of CSIA, the Semiconductor Industry Association, is yet to announce the joint working group between the two countries. As part of the working group, a total of 10 experts from each side will attend meetings every six months to update each other on technology and trade restriction policies between Washington DC and Beijing.

These meetings will also aim to work out policy proposals and solutions to other hurdles.
