A consignment of 20 micro-sprayers from the UK has reached Pakistan to assist in tackling the desert locust swarms wreaking havoc in the country.
The sprayers are from Micron Sprayers Ltd, a UK-based company with more than 50 years of industry experience. Micron’s products are used in over 100 countries across the globe.
The micro-sprayers are a part of a £1 million aid package from the UK government to help Pakistan counter the menace that had been declared a national emergency in February earlier this year.
The UK government’s aid package against locust swarms includes:
- 50 micro-sprayers, of which 20 have arrived, to control locust swarms
- 1,300 PPE kits to ensure operations continue safely amid the pandemic
- Financial assistance to 18,000 vulnerable farmers
While handing over the sprayers to the Pakistani government in an official ceremony, the British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Dr. Christian Turner CMG, said
Make no mistake, this locust outbreak is a big challenge. That is why the UK, through aid to FAO, has worked to ensure these UK-manufactured crop sprayers get to Pakistan as soon as possible.
