Twitter has suspended the verified account of “Pakistan Defence” [@defence.pk], reportedly over a complaint filed by an Indian student from New Delhi, whose photograph had been misused by the handle.

The account posted an altered image of Kawalpreet Kaur holding a piece of paper saying,

I am an Indian but I hate India because India is a colonial entity that has occupied nations such as Nagas, Kashmir, Manipurs, Hyderabad, Junagadh, Sikkim, Mizoram, Goa.

Pakistan Defence tweeted it on November 17 with the caption:

Indians are finally realising the truth; their country is actually a colonialist entity.

The account, which is linked to the website defence.pk, calls itself a “one-stop resource for Pakistan defence, strategic affairs, security issues, world defence and military affairs” in its bio.

It was suspended after the victim of the altered (photoshopped) image submitted a complaint about the image.

This is not the first time that Twitter has taken an account down for misinformation and spreading propaganda but the Twitter authorities are very “selective” about the accounts they shut down.

The photograph which was altered had this written on the placard

I am a citizen of India and I stand with the secular values of our Constitution. I will write against communal mob lynching of Muslims in our country. #CitizensAgainstMobLynching.

After seeing the altered photo on the verified account of Pakistan Defence, she was shocked. This was her reply to the altered photograph posted on November 18th

She submitted her complaint to the Twitter authorities and later the account was removed.

The person who is “allegedly” the administrator of the account (@Horus) was also suspended.

Soon after the account was taken down by the Twitter authorities, the Facebook account for Pakistan Defence uploaded a status saying,

https://www.facebook.com/pakistanidefence/posts/10155466860992663

Pakistan Defence stated that all these rumours around the suspension of the Twitter account are inaccurate. The only reason given by Twitter was for using multiple accounts, which is not true.

The administrator added,

The administrator said on their Facebook account that,

The ban is politically motivated. We have been successful with our Kashmir campaign to large extent. Twitter unfortunately has a lot of Indian influence in their moderating team.

Whatever the outcome, Twitter being Pro-Indian or Pakistan Defence offering petty excuses is up for debate.
