Twitter is Asking Users to Help it Ban “Dehumanizing Content”

Twitter recently started reaching out to its users for figuring out a way to remove ‘dehumanizing’ posts and comments that set the stage for violence in real life.

The social network giant has already been working on a number of ways to ban hateful content and users that do not follow Twitter’s policies. The latest change is intended to bar tweets that dehumanize users based on religion, race, sexual orientation, and other classes.

Vijaya Gadde and Del Harvey from Twitter’s trust and safety department said,

Language that makes someone less than human can have repercussions off the service, including normalizing serious violence,

We want to expand our hateful conduct policy to include content that dehumanizes others based on their membership in an identifiable group, even when the material does not include a direct target.

Twitter’s Policy Changes

Twitter’s rules already include a filter that bans comments that provoke violence, hatefulness, and other types of hostile posts that discriminate or threaten its users. However, some abusive content still makes its way to the targeted users and does not get filtered out in the system.

So this time, Twitter is asking its users to give feedback on wordings that are hurtful, and are needed to be included in the social network’s policies.

Social networks, especially Facebook, have been under fire for letting people misuse their platforms to spread fake news for faux advertisement. Twitter too was used for such purposes and its administration had to face the lawmakers earlier this year.
