Twitter Adds Support for Login via Physical Keys

For people more paranoid than the usual regarding the safety of their social media accounts, there’s some good news.

Twitter has announced support for physical security keys, which a safer alternative to passwords. The feature is already being rolled out to users worldwide.

The security keys operate using the FIDO Universal U2F standard, meaning any commonly available security key such as the Yubikey will work quite easily.

The security key works fairly easily, requiring you to plug it into a USB port. Alternatively, it can also be used to sign-in using NFC on your phone, if you happen to hold a key which supports the feature, such as the Yubikey Neo.

Setting up is easy enough. Make sure you go into settings and privacy under that, after which you’ll go to the Security section under Account. You can choose your preferred verification method there.

That won’t be all, as Twitter is also now requiring the confirmation of a new account using email or contact number in a bid to reduce spam.

Twitter is just the latest to join the trend of mainstreaming password alternatives, with Facebook having already added FIDO security support in the recent past, alongside Dropbox and Firefox.

The network recently announced that it had removed 214% more spam accounts from its servers, investigating almost 10 million of them in May of this year alone. With that progress, the network is sure to deliver a much better experience than before.
