The iPhone 7 Costs Apple Just $225 to Make

This is turning out to be a tradition. Almost every year, we hear stories of just how big Apple’s profit margin will be and things are no different this year.

According to an estimate courtesy of IHS Markit, the new iPhone 7 costs just $219.80, based on the cost of its components. Assembly costs Apple $5 on top of that. The new iPhone 7, which starts at 32 GB of storage by default, costs $36.89 more than the last year’s iPhone 6s to build.

The most expensive component is still the 3D Touch display, which costs $39 to make, followed by the modem and baseband chips which cost $33.90.

The A10 fusion processor is next, costing $26.90, followed by the cameras, which just costs $19.90 while the flash memory and RAM are not far either at $16.40. The battery, on the other hand, costs only $2.50 despite being bigger and better than one on the phone it replaces.

It is worth noting that an estimate of the iPhone 7 Plus model, with its larger display and dual cameras hasn’t been made yet, though the latter will likely cost around $40 to make, making the phone more expensive to make.

Of course, these figures are just for the manufacturing and components, skipping other important details such as R&D, shipping and especially marketing, it is still quite a sizeable profit for Apple.

The profit in this case is $424 per each device built, meaning a markup of 189 percent. Apple has itself never revealed the cost of any product it has built but even though sales have peaked, the iPhone is where the money at.
