Mobile phone companies have managed to re-verify 68.76 million SIMs during the SIM re-verification drive, while another 10.96 million SIMs were disowned by customers till yesterday, we have checked with relevant authorities.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority said that these 80 million processed SIMs (reverified, disowned or blocked) were registered against 53.07 million unique CNICs.

According to these stats from PTA, 23 million SIMs (out of 103 total million SIMs) are yet to be re-verified and mobile phone companies have almost 1 month remaining to get these pending SIMs re-verified or they will get blocked after the deadline of April 14th, 2015.

Not to be mentioned, a good chunk is likely to remain un-verified in the end because either such SIMs are dormant for long or those millions of SIMs used by illegal voice traffickers are not going to get re-verified at all.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority said that it is contented with the performance of mobile phone companies. Regulator has already termed re-verification of SIMs, one of its kind registration process for SIMs, a successful campaign.

Mobile phone companies think that they will be able to verify another 12-15 million SIMs till the deadline, which means that total number of blocked SIMs will not exceed 15 million mark, almost one third of what experts had anticipated at the start of re-verification drive.

When asked about companies’ respective stats and market positioning, PTA said that it won’t be able to reveal company wise re-verification stats of telcos till the end of campaign.
