The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a surge in internet usage and gaming, and as a result, PUBG Mobile enjoyed one of its best months so far. The battle royale shooter managed to become the highest-grossing mobile game in May 2020 with more than $226 million in user spending.
PUBG Mobile, also known as Peacekeeper Elite in China, has been one of the most popular mobile games ever since its release in 2018. It is a free to play shooter that has a plethora of in-app purchases.
The latest report from Sensor Tower shows that PUBG Mobile’s revenue hit $226 million in May this year. This was an increase of 41% compared to last year.
More than half of the game’s in-app purchases came from China (53%) but the USA (10.2%) and Saudia Arabia (5.5%) also contributed significant amounts. The number was comparatively lower in India, a region where the game is immensely popular, but in-app purchases are not.
The second highest-grossing game in May was Honor of Kings, which is another title from Tencent. It showed a year on year growth of 42% to hit $204.5 million. Nearly all of its revenue (95%) came from China and a small amount also came from Thailand (2.2%).
Pokemon GO also reached a record high ($82.2 million) in the same period since September 2019. The developer recently added a new update to encourage players to play indoors.
