The federal government has decided to waive the penalty on the late filers of the income tax returns, State Minister for Revenue Hammad Azhar said on Tuesday.

The minister took Twitter to announce the news.

“The government has decided to waive the penalty for late filing along with audit for Salaried Group of late filer cases. These cases were selected for audit and penalty was prescribed by the previous government. This govt is committed on facilitating people in filing returns,” he tweeted.

On November 14, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had issued audit notices to over a million filers who had submitted returns for tax years 2015, 2016 and 2017 after the expiry of the deadline.

They were asked to either pay a penalty of Rs20,000 or higher taxes for automatic closure of audit proceedings.
