Private School Fee Hikes Since December 2017 Are Illegal: Sindh High Court

Sindh High Court on Monday declared school fees increased by the private schools after December 20 2017 as illegal.
The high court ordered to restore the fees’ structure prevalent before December 20, 2017, saying that any raise given or made unilaterally by the private schools after that date is illegal and thus without any legal effect.
The court asked the private schools to adjust the increased fees charged from the parents.
A bench of the Sindh High Court was hearing a contempt of court petition filed by some parents against the private schools for not complying with the directive of the SHC asking not to raise tuition fees beyond the permissible limit under the laws.
During the hearing of the case, it emerged that private schools were charging fees for three months in advance from the parents.

The court took notice of this and asked the counsel of private schools under which law the advance fees for three months were being collected from the parents.
The court restrained the schools from collecting three months’ fees in advance from the parent in one go.
Director Private Schools Mansoon Siddiqui was directed to submit a report about the fee structure of the private schools to the court.
The court warned that contempt proceeding will be initiated against those schools not complying with the court’s directives.

Further hearing of the case was adjourned till December 17 2018.
During the proceeding, the counsel of the private schools told the court the schools were depositing the amount in contention with the Supreme Court as per its directives.
The judge asked the counsel for private schools to submit details of the money being deposited with the SC to the court.
