Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) is framing regulations for Over the Top (OTT) and Web TV. Chairman PEMRA  Muhammad Salim Baig revealed this while talking to the local media.

He further told that PEMRA has also held a meeting with other regulators, such as Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to chalk out the policy.

Moreover, a committee comprising PEMRA officers has also been formed to devise the draft regulation till February 28th.  The committee has been conducting meetings on a daily basis to complete the draft before the deadline.

While talking to the media, Chairman PEMRA said that the authority is set to lay out new licensing regimes for the upcoming technologies that include Web TV, OTT, etc. It is to ensure that the new technologies can be introduced in Pakistan to make it more progressive.

The chairman also told that the regulatory authority has initiated the process to award five (05) Teleport Licenses and hopefully, the licenses will be issued by the end of this month. Notably, the Teleport Licenses will enable the satellite TV channels to uplink their signals at a lower cost.

Baig also said that the DTH licenses will be awarded within this month. He added that this project will lead to around 500 million dollars of investment in Pakistan and create employment for around 10,000 individuals.

A few months ago, PEMRA had invited applications for satellite TV channel licensing in seven categories, i.e., news & current affairs, sports, entertainment, health, regional languages, agriculture, and education. The deadline for the submission of the applications is February 6, 2019.

The chairman said that they will complete the process of issuance of 70 new satellite TV channels soon. Whereas, the licenses to the successful bidders will be awarded in a few months.
