Pakistan is set to receive another batch of Coronavirus vaccine consisting of 1 million doses from China next week, Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health, Dr. Faisal Sultan, has revealed.

While speaking with a local news outlet, the SAPM on Health said that 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines developed by Sinopharm and CanSinoBIO will reach Pakistan next week.

He noted that healthcare workers and senior citizens are currently being immunized under the mass vaccination campaign that was started last month after receiving 0.5 million doses of Sinopharm’s Coronavirus vaccine from China.

Dr. Faisal noted that COVID-19 vaccines imported by the private sector will be available at all leading hospitals and laboratories across the country in the next few days.

Regarding the third wave of Coronavirus, the SAPM said that COVID-19 cases in nine cities including Lahore, Peshawar, and Islamabad are increasing rapidly.

Dr. Faisal attributed the flagrant violations of COVID-19 SOPs during wedding ceremonies as the primary reason behind the rising cases during the third wave of Coronavirus.

When asked about the possibility of complete lockdown across the country, the SAPM ruled out a complete closure of businesses and other economic activities amid the third wave of COVID-19.

He said that government will continue to impose smart/micro-smart lockdowns in COVID-19 hotspots to break the chain of the virus, adding that the public must adhere to the COVID-19 SOPs issued by the government and ensure the wearing of facemasks in crowded spaces.
