IT Minister Announces Plans to Turn Karachi into a Digital City

Pakistan will establish a regulatory authority for high-quality Information Technology (IT) education in the country and Karachi is going to be the country’s first digital city.
This was disclosed by Federal Minister for IT, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, at the three-day 18th ITCN Asia IT & Telecom Show and Fire and Safety Asia at Expo Center Karachi on Tuesday.

The IT Minister was talking with journalists after inaugurating the exhibition. The federal IT Minister visited various halls and also addressed a conference on the ‘Role of IT and Challenges in China Pakistan Economic Corridor’.
To Adopt Modern Technology
Khalid Siddiqui told that the proposed authority will improve the quality of IT and tech education in Pakistan. Only those areas of IT education will be promoted for education which is demanded by the industry. Khalid Maqbool said that Pakistan can only compete on a global scale by adopting modern information technology.
Mr. Khalid said,
In the current economic era, many regions are prospering. But we have to take a look at why we are not progressing. Pakistan’s IT sector had many growth opportunities since 1990 but we missed them. At that time Pakistan could’ve become the base of the call center industry. I believe that we can still become an engine of growth.
The IT Minister added that data will be the currency of the future. To this end, a data center will be established in Karachi. He also announced his intention to turn Karachi into a digital city.
On the occasion, the Vice President of E-Commerce Gateway Pakistan Umair Nizam, informed that over 600 international brands are on display at the exhibition.
He said that about 250 delegates representing 600 international companies are attending the Fire and Safety Exhibition. He said that over 150,000 visitors are expected at six halls of the expo center.
It is worth mentioning here that deals worth $100 million were signed at the 17th ITCN Asia.
