Javed Afridi, the 35-year-old owner of a large group of companies including JW Park Motors and Morris Garages (MG) Pakistan, is arguably responsible for the hype and marketing of the MG in Pakistan because of his frequent social media teases and reveals.

Once again, his simple but cryptic tweet “Tesla in Pakistan?” from yesterday has left the car enthusiasts community abuzz.

Javed Afridi is one of the most influential local figures who is a huge proponent of the Electric Vehicle (EV) policy in Pakistan and has always been very vocal in terms of informing people of its benefits. Note that the MG lineup in Pakistan also features an EV model, the ZS EV, although it is yet to be formally launched.

Afridi’s recent tweet is intriguing because, with the new EV policy in place and the reports about the upcoming renewal of the Auto Development Policy, Tesla’s arrival in Pakistan seems plausible.

In continuation of having developed a huge presence in the global market over the last few years, Tesla recently announced that it will be setting up a manufacturing plant in India this year. The automaker is also known to provide a comprehensive charging station network and regular over-the-air updates for its cars in every market where it sets up shop.

However, as good as Tesla’s vehicles are, they are not known for being the cheapest EVs in the market. Its cheapest car, the Tesla Model 3, has a starting price of almost $30,000, which makes it among the more expensive options for our market.

There are more questions about this development than there are answers, and jumping to conclusions at this point would not be wise. Nonetheless, the mysterious lack of details for Javed Afridi’s intriguing tweet has certainly given car enthusiasts in Pakistan something to look forward to.
