Pakistan’s star all-rounder, Shahid Afridi has been recently making headlines for a number of reasons; from shocking revelations in his autobiography ‘Game Changer’ to violating ambassadorship terms with a leading food brand.

The latest controversy is caused by Afridi’s comments regarding his daughters.

The 39-year-old said that cricket is not for his daughters and that, as a conservative Pakistani father, he wouldn’t allow his girls to partake in any outdoor sports.

The comments have sparked plenty of debate on social media, labeling him as a misogynist along with other things.

They have permission to play all the indoor games they want, but my daughters are not going to be competing in public sporting activities.

Justified or Not?

Coming from a Pusthun background with conservative forefathers, Afridi might not be wrong about his daughters’ upbringing.

For a man who hasn’t ever brought his wife on the screen despite being a hugely popular celebrity in Pakistan and abroad, the decision to bar his daughters from playing outdoor sports is not surprising.

Recently a video surfaced on social media where renowned footballer, Mohammad Salah’s daughter was seen enjoying her time on the field when she kicked the football across the goal line as the crowd made a huge cheer.

That is one way of bringing up your child, however, calling Afridi so many things for a decision he is very much entitled to make, is not justified as well.

Some called out Afridi to learn from the renowned footballer.

He further said that he had given them permission to play indoor sports and that it was their collective decision due to social and religious reasons.

Regarding feminists’ comments, Afridi said that he simply does not care what they have to say about his parenting. And rightly so, it’s his personal matter and the so-called feminists need not interfere in someone’s personal life.
