The smartphone camera industry might truly be at its zenith right now, as evident from the rise of record-breaking rating scores on DxOMark.

The latest such blip in the radar here was the new Huawei Mate 10 Pro, a new flagship which has managed a score of 97 points on DxOMark’s camera test. The score is just a solitary point behind the new Google Pixel 2, which currently sits on top with a 98.

The phone comes with a dual-lens setup of 20 MP + 12 MP, f/1.6 sensors on the back, with Leica optics and OIS. It has a hybrid laser+phase-detection autofocus, while the video capabilities include 4K mode recording at upto 30 fps. The front camera is a single 8 MP sensor. The phone managed to outscore both the iPhone 8 Plus and the Galaxy Note 8, both of whom managed scores of 94.

Best Smartphone Camera in The World for Photography

In its benchmark test, DxO Mark praised the photography skills of the camera in particular, rewarding it with a perfect 100 score on the test (the highest it has ever awarded to a smartphone).

This means that according to DxOMark, Huawei Mate 10 Pro is hands down the best smartphone camera in the world, to date.

On the video front, the camera failed to achieve a similar lofty score that it did on the photography front, with a score of 91.

The stills were applauded for their detail as well as the exposure levels and HDR. The low noise levels, the 2x lossless zoom, the speed and the accurate focusing were impressive.

DxO Mark wasn’t particularly fond of the texture level, which was an issue under every lighting scenario.

Comparison With Others

The Google Pixel 2 still pipped the Mate 10 Pro by a bit, by achieving a score of 99 in stills but a decidedly better 96 on the videos front. Apart from the pixel peepers, very few people will actually notice the difference between phones in real-life, though.

This doesn’t mean that your iPhone 8 or Samsung Galaxy S8’s camera is bad, not at all. In real world scenarios you wouldn’t see much of a difference. However, for photography buffs, the Mate 10 will be the better choice.
