Four years after launching domestic operations in Pakistan, the private airline Serene Air is geared up to expand globally next month.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has permitted Serene Air to operate direct flights to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after getting the approval of the federal cabinet.

Serene Air will commence its flight operations to Jeddah, Riyadh, Dubai, and Sharjah in January 2021 using Airbus A330 and Boeing 777 aircraft.

The airline has also received clearance from Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation to operate flights to Jeddah and Riyadh.

The airline has also sought permission to start direct flights to China and the United Kingdom, and the application is under consideration.

The approval will toughen the competition for the cash-strapped Pakistan International Airline (PIA) as these are some of the most profitable international routes for airlines.

The CAA Director of Air Transport and Economic Regulations issued a notification in this regard on Thursday that read:

The designation of Serene Air to the UAE and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has been accepted by the respective aeronautical authorities. Formal flight schedules will be submitted through the Air Transport Flight Management at an appropriate time when Serene Air is ready to commence international flight operations for the KSA and UAE”.

Speaking to the media, a senior Serene Air official said that the airline has already established offices in Jeddah and Riyadh and that its Dubai and Sharjah offices will be set up soon.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the process of operating international flights was delayed, but it will be started in January 2021,” he added.
