Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has suspended the membership of 332 lawmakers in national and provincial assemblies over non-disclosure of assets.

The commission has forwarded a summary to the Chief Election Commissioner (CECP), Sardar Raza Khan, in this regard.

The notification said that 839 legislators out of 1,174 submitted their asset details to the commission. Those who failed to comply with the ECP’s order despite several notices will now face suspension.

“The Commission shall, on the sixteenth day of January, by an order suspend the membership of a Member of an Assembly and Senate who fails to submit the statement of assets and liabilities by the fifteenth day of January and such member shall cease to function till he files the statement of assets and liabilities,” it said.

The ECP has temporarily terminated the membership of these MNAs and MPAs and has urged them to submit their annual asset details to the commission. The suspended legislators have been barred from taking part in the legislative process or from bearing any government office.

The list includes some prominent names from the government like State Minister Shahryar Khan Afridi, Federal Minister Fawad Chaudhary, Federal Minister for Health Amir Mehmood Kiyani, Deputy Speaker National Assembly Qasim Suri and Ali Amin Gandapuri.

Moreover, membership of Akhtar Mengal, Federal Health Minister Amir Kiani, Hussain Illahi, MPA Bilal Yaseen, Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman and others has also been suspended.

According to the ECP’s notification, the membership of as many as 20 senators, 72 MNAs, 115 members of Punjab Assembly, 52 members of Sindh Assembly, 44 members of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and 19 members of Balochistan Assembly, has been suspended.
