According to a new report, Apple is planning on developing an ultra-advanced micro-LED display tech in collaboration with TSMC at a secret facility in Taiwan. This display will be built directly on a chipset and one of its main applications is augmented reality. Sources familiar with the matter have revealed that with these displays, Apple plans on adding augmented reality support to its products.

The Micro-LED displays, unlike LCD panels found in smartphones and TVs, are not built on glass substrates. Instead, they are built directly on the substrates that semiconductors are fabricated on. This allows the panels to be small and thin, reducing the power consumption, which makes them ideal for AR device applications.

TSMC has been the sole provider of chipsets for iPhones. This new collaboration marks the growing relationship between Apple and TSMC. According to sources, at the moment, the new Micro-LED project is at the trial production stage and it will still take several years to reach mass production. Moreover, the displays under development are less than an inch in size.

Talking about this, the source added,

Panel players are good at making screens bigger and bigger, but when it comes to thin and light devices like AR glasses, you need a very small screen.

Apart from this, further reports suggest that Apple has even hired dozens of veterans from Taiwanese display maker AU Optoelectronics to help with its micro-LED project. These employees have been asked to a strict non-disclosure agreement.
