Recently, the tech giant Google I/O’s CEO Sundar Pichai announced a new update for the Google Assistant at its annual developers conference in Silicon Valley. On Tuesday, 8th May, 2018, Google unveiled the new AI assistant tool. It can make calls and send text messages to anyone and is even capable of intelligent and continuous communication. This AI-powered assistant can help people get away from their everyday chores and is a way to help people get away from their phone screens.

Being Pakistanis, we all have those moments when we trust phones upon each other saying, “Nahi yaar tu call kr le.” Some of us, like me, may even be ashamed of being called “baji” on phones even though we are men. The new Google Assistant may even be a blessing for us. Though we have to wait a bit before it comes to Pakistan. Pichai even played recordings of the Google Assistant independently calling a hair salon and a restaurants to book appointment and reserve a table. The CEO announced that it will also be able to book seats for you at a movie theater. It interacted with the staff in such a way that they didn’t even realize they were talking to an AI. The call made to the restaurant showed a huge amount of intelligence that even the developers weren’t expecting at first. It even expresses gratitude when children ask it to do something nicely like, “Do —–, please.”

The assistant also comes with 6 voices and has even surpassed Siri and Alexa as the most efficient assistant software. It can also support 30 languages and will soon be available in over 80 countries. This new tool is a huge step forward in the field of artificial intelligence since the AI Sophia was built.
