What’s Happening In Pakistan: Weekly Update

- Pakistani and Swiss scientists have discovered a new mutation gene MARK3 causing eye defects and blindness due to eyeballs shrinking, at a high rate. This gene was never linked with any diseases before. The scientists found that the children inherited the mutated gene from both parents who were cousins. The alarming rate of these genetic disease resulted in the establishment of Pakistan’s first genetic mutation database at Kohat University of science and technology. The database has records of 120 disorders and syndromes along with more than 1000 listed mutations of which mostly are Pakistan specific.
- CPEC passenger bus service will start operations from 3rd November 2018. The bus service for China-Pak economic Corridor (CPEC) is a 30 hour-long trip with facilities and cameras installed inside bus for security of the passengers. The bus service will be schedules four days a week. (sat-tues departure from Lahore and tues-fri departure from Tashkurgan). On way ticket from Lahore is 13,000 per seat and RMb600 from Tashkurgan to Lahore and two-way return ticket cost 23,000 per seat.
- Prominent Club of Spanish top division, Atletico Madrid announced to open an official training academy in Pakistan. The official media launch was held in Lahore but the location for academy is not decided yet
- Dawn News/ Dawn.com Pakistan shared that somebody has been sharing fake news under their name. On October 13th a fake news circulated about Maryam Nawaz pregnancy and that medical reports were obtained by Dawn News. Dawn News published an article suggesting how to recognize an authentic article by the company.
- Government took another step back from yet another official announcement, regarding the increase of FED/ tax on tobacco industry. A 46% increment of FED was announced back in September on cigarettes locally produced but it will not be implemented now.
- Pakistani artist Rashid Rana work called ‘Red Carpet Series # 1 has been auctioned for a whopping Rs. 34.4 million at Bonhams, London. Internationally acclaimed artist, Rashid Rana’s work’ fetched the highest price among all the art works by Pakistani artists beating the legendary late Sadequain’s untitled work that was sold for Rs.12 million.
- Two rescue 1122 workers have been accused and suspended over involvement in sexual assault of a Sikh teenage girl in Nankana Sahib, a district in Punjab province of Pakistan on 27th October. According to legal examination, no bruises or laceration were found on victims body. The further test will be conducted in Lahore and expected time frame of results is two months. The family of victim claims that the teenage girl who is also mentally challenged went missing on 28th oct. At 1:30am family raided the suspicious looking rescue ambulance parked roadside; there they found the two offenders assaulting their daughter.
- After the story of child maid abused by Army serving woman and her doctor husband surfaced on social media, the army is soon to conduct interview with the child. After the girl physical examination, multiply bruises on her body were found along with three cuts on head with a blunt weapon. The husband denied any or all abuse and claimed the child was only taunted by them and the injuries are of day she was slipped from stairs.
- Another couple was arrested in Lahore for abusing their 11 year old maid; the girl escaped the house and reached neighbors for help, later she was handed over to the protection bureau.The minor girl has been burned with hot iron and beaten with sticks.The girl shared that she was left under this family custody four years ago by her mother.
- A 17 year old girl was gang raped at gunpoint in Muzaffargarh’s Alipur area by a man and two accomplices over the dispute of money. The victim’s father is a labourer and owned the offender Rs.4000. The man demanded his money and claimed that he would then return his daughter; after transfer of money the father was allowed to talk with his daughter, over the call the girl told her father about sexual assault on 27th October.
- FIA cyber crime wing arrested a man in Rawalpindi charged with harassing and blackmailing women online.The man was involved in threatening three sisters to Photoshop their pictures and upload them on social media if girls do not agree to have illicit relations with him.
- The KPK government banned the invitation of VIP males to the girls school and directed school management to invite female figures to the annual or any functions as a chief guest.
- Chaudhry Mehmood Akhtar, a former LHC judge was shot dead on 30th October at Jatli police station in chakwal. Unidentified attackers open fire on his car, the judge died on the spot whereas his niece faced bullet injuries.
- More than 2,200 car were found registered under the name of Sikandar Hayat, an 82 year old former judge whereas his lawyer informed SC that his client owns only one car. The matter was acknowledged after contacting Punjab Excise and Taxation Department when the former judge received fine for car he didn’t own.\
- Dr Farooq Sattar is now formally removed from party’s top decision making forum as the party accepted his resignation due to internal differences from party’s co-ordination committee last month. Earlier this year he was also removed as party convener by the Bahadrabad group.
- A rain network of 29 NGO’s reported that as per media 53 persons committed suicide in Thar where as 10 other were saved in 2018 and Samaro Taluka had 53% of suicide cases. Other than poverty, the team concluded that discouraging behaviors, injudicious distribution of resources, unawareness and lack of ownership, unattended psychological issues, harassment, intolerance, drug usage, early marriages, women trafficking were factors involved in the suicides. The 90% of victims belonged to minority groups in Thar.
