Taking place every four years, the sensational Commonwealth Games, like the Olympics, are a platform for the players of the member countries to show-off their skills and bring pride to their nations. Pakistan is participating in 10 games with 56 participants in the Commonwealth Games 2018 being held in Gold Coast, Australia from 4th April to 15th April, 2018.

With 46 male and 10 female competitors participating in Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Field Hockey, Shooting, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

2 participants are trying their luck in athletics. One male participant Arshad Nadeem in Javelin Throw and one female participant Najma Parveen in 200m and 400m races.

Pakistan is participating in Badminton with 4 athletes (two men and 2 women) with Murad Ali and Irfan Bhatti from males and Palwasha Bashir and Mahoor Shahzad from females. They are also participating in doubles with teams of Palwasha and Irfan and Mahoor and Shahzad in mixed doubles. Pakistan’s first match will be against Scotland on 5th April, 2018. Second match with India, also on 5th April and the third match on 6th April with Sri Lanka.

Pakistan is Participating in 2018 Commonwealth Games

Pakistan is participating with 4 male participants for the boxing matches namely, Syed Asif, Ali Ahmad, Gul Zaib and Awais Ali Khan to participate in -52kg, -60kg, -69kg, -81kg events respectively. 18 players from Pakistan are playing in the Field Hockey matches. The roster consists of Mazhar Abbas, Tasawar Abbas, Mubashar Ali, Muhammad Arshad, Muhammad Atiq, Ammad Shakeel Butt, Imran Butt, Muhammad Dilbur, Muhammad Irfan, another Muhammad Irfan, Abu Mahmood, Muhammad Qadir, Muhammad Arslan, Safqat Rasool, Rana Riaz, Muhammad Rizwan, Ali Shan and Tazeem ul Hassan. The matches take place against Wales, India, England and Malaysia on 5th, 7th, 8th and 11th April respectively.

7 players (5 men and 2 women) are taking part in the shooting events with Ghufran Adil and Minhal Sohail in 10m air rifle, Mehwish Ferhan in 10 metre air pistol, Muhammad Khalil Akhtar in 25 metre rapid fire pistol, Aamer Iqbal and Muhammad Farrukh Nadeem in Trap and Double Trap and Usman Chand in Skeet.

Pakistan in 2018 Commonwealth Games

4 athletes are to take part in Squash competitions with Tayyab Mehmood and Farhan Zaman from men’s side and Faiza Zafar and Madina Zafar from women’s side. The pairing for mixed doubles is Faiza Zafar and Farhan Zaman and Madina Zafar and Tayyab Aslam.

Pakistan is participating with 2 athletes in swimming, Syed Tariq playing in 50m and 100m freestyle and backstroke and Bisma Khan in 50 m freestyle and backstroke and 100m freestyle. 2 men and 2 women appear in the table tennis events namely Fahad Khawaja, Muhammad Ramiz, Hareem Ali and Fatima Khan. The pairing for mixed doubles is Hareem Ali and Fahad Khawaja, Fatima Khan and Muhammad Ramiz. 5 men, Abdullah Ghafoor, Talha Talib, Abu Sufyan, Usman Rathore and Muhammad Butt appear in the weightlifting contest. 6 men are taking part in wrestling competitions, Muhammad Bilal in 57kg, Abdul Wahab in 65kg, Muhammad Asad Butt in 74kg, Muhammad Inam in 86kg, Umair Ahmad in 97kg and Tayab Raza in 125kg.

Most of the participants are new and previously unknown athletes. Let’s hope this year’s Commonwealth games prove to be their rise to fame.
